Encounter-centered Transformation: Essentials

A 22-Module video program for professionals with Hedy Schleifer

If you’ve been wanting to learn or deepen your understanding and practical skills with Encounter-centered Transformation®, this is your invitation to enroll in something truly special and unique.

Encounter-centered Transformation (EcT) is a structured relational process designed to help couples move beyond their entrenched patterns and into deep connection and relational maturity.

Encounter-centered Transformation: Essentials offers therapists, coaches, and helping professionals the rare opportunity to study EcT as it is practiced in real time by the creator of the methodology, Hedy Schleifer, in the Couple’s Journey.

Across 22 modules and approximately 30 hours of recorded work, you will watch Hedy guide two very different couples through the complete unfolding of the Couple’s Journey, witnessing the full arc of it all in real time,  with a view that’s close enough to observe the nuance, pacing, and discernment behind every moment of Hedy’s guiding.

You’ll observe Hedy’s incredible presence. as well as the mastery with which Hedy listens, how she chooses her words, how she sets the pace, and how she guides each couple step by step toward deep connection and relational maturity.

You’ll witness the partners themselves, their reactions, hesitations, breakthroughs, and responses to the process, and see how the work takes root in real time.

And you’ll have the opportunity to follow the Couple’s Journey in its entirety, twice, across two distinct relational contexts, noticing the shifts, the pauses, and the intentional choices that shape genuine transformation as it unfolds in each of the couples.

This level of access to Hedy’s guiding work has never before been made available before. We’re excited to make it available now through Essentials.

“From the first moment I was transported, as if right there in the room.”  – Sharon Day, PCC, Orgasmic Body-bliss Coach

What You’ll Begin to Notice

Many professional trainings teach concepts first and application second. Essentials reverses that order.

Here, you begin inside the living process itself. You will not simply see what EcT is, but how it breathes. You will notice how language shapes safety, how pacing affects openness, how small adjustments shift the relational field, and how the Guide’s presence and discernment create the conditions for transformation.

Watching the complete unfolding of the Couple’s Journey, twice, allows you to see patterns that cannot be captured in summaries, demonstrations, or brief excerpts. You begin to recognize the rhythm of the work, the timing of interventions, the relational turning points, and the Guide’s steady presence as transformation takes root.

You’ll  also witness the couples’ transformation right in front of you, seeing how shifts in understanding and connection unfold over time.

Because you’ll witness two very different couples moving through the same relational process, you’ll begin to distinguish what belongs to the uniqueness of each couple and what reflects the enduring principles of Encounter-centered Transformation.

This kind of close observation trains your eye and ear. It sharpens your sensitivity to timing, language, and relational transformation. That depth of perception, more than technique alone, shapes lasting professional growth with Encounter-centered Transformation.

For this reason, Essentials is not a certification training or a step-by-step clinical course.

Hedy often describes it as the video version of reading a book. You watch carefully. You learn deeply. You carry forward what is alive for you.

Rather than being instructed in what to do next, you observe what happens when the work is practiced with mastery. As with any meaningful professional study, you are entrusted with the thoughtful integration of what you learn here.

What You’ll Find In Essentials

Encounter-centered Transformation: Essentials gives you remarkable access to the work.

Inside the program, you’ll receive:

  • About 30 hours of recorded guiding by Hedy Schleifer, presented across 22 beautifully filmed modules for you to watch, revisit, explore, and study
  • Two complete Couple’s Journeys, available to watch from beginning to end
  • Downloadable transcripts for every module so you can study the language and concepts closely and keep them for ongoing reference
  • The EcT Lexicon, a companion reference defining key terms and concepts, yours to download and keep

Essentials is designed as a self-paced video program for professionals. Filmed up close, this program brings you as near to the work as you can be without sitting in the room alongside Hedy and the couples.

The first seven modules are available immediately upon enrollment. The remaining modules are released after 30 days to support a thoughtful pace and allow for early integration before continuing through the full program.

You will have six months of streaming access to the video program, allowing you to move through the material at your own pace and revisit key moments during your access period.

Inside the Couple's Journey

While every Couple’s Journey is unique, there is a recognizable arc that unfolds across the work. Not every couple moves through every element in the same way. The pacing, emphasis, and sequence are guided by what will best serve the couple.

What remains constant are the core experiences and structures that shape every Couple’s Journey, and that you’ll witness throughout both journeys and get to learn about. These are:

  • The Three Invisible Connectors
  • The Art of Hosting and Visiting

But there are many more that can be added to any journey. You’ll see them in Essentials.

Across a typical ten-session journey, additional elements may include:

Opening the Work

  • Dreams and Aspirations

Entering Deeper Conversations

  • The Toughest Conversation
  • The Wygelians
  • Sanctuary (including the creation of a physical space at home)
  • The Three Invisible Connectors

Exploring the Inner Landscape

  • The Precious Neighborhood
  • Visiting and Hosting
  • The Neighborhood of Challenge

Moving Through Transformation

  • Traveling the U
  • The Embedded Gift
  • The Emergent Future

Integration and Forward Movement

  • The Hero’s Journey
  • Core Needs and Requests
  • Love Letters

This is not a prescribed method, as much as it is a living, responsive process, guided moment by moment based on what will serve the couple.

What you will witness inside Essentials is how this journey actually unfolds in real time. What you’ll gain from it is something you can integrate into your own work in whatever ways would serve those you support.

Practitioners Share Their Experience

From the first moment I was transported, as if right there in the room. I could see the nervousness on each face of the couple, and then within seconds of Hedy sitting with them, could see them soften, open, and plunge right in, as Hedy invited them to do. Even if there were no teachings nor philosophy, simply being in the presence of Hedy’s own masterful embodiment of “visiting across the bridge” as she speaks with the couple is its own masterclass in the principles she is teaching them. But of course each tool and art Hedy describes to the couple is right there, brilliantly demonstrated in real time. Any fee for this course is a mere token, as it is truly priceless. – Sharon Day, PCC, Orgasmic Body-bliss Coach
Encounter-Centered Transformation: Essentials offers something rarely available in our field: the opportunity to witness mastery as it unfolds. Hedy Schleifer holds the highest aspirations for human connection and brings them to life, moment by moment, with extrordinary presence, exquisite care, curiosity, and precision. What is most striking is the congruence between what she teaches and how she works. Her presence creates safety, her guidance is both skillful and deeply attuned, and her unwavering positive regard allows transformation to emerge naturally within the couple. This is more than a learning experience. It is an immersion in what becomes possible when relational work is practiced at its highest level. – Amy Blake, LCSW
In a world drowning in information yet starving for wisdom, Hedy Schleifer offers something rare and essential: a living transmission of relational transformation. This program is not traditional teaching, but an invitation to learn by witnessing transformation as it unfolds—resonant, powerful, and deeply human. After more than 30 years as a couples therapist myself and with extensive training across modalities, I can say without hesitation that Hedy is unparalleled in guiding couples out of survival and into profound connection. By observing her work in real time, we come to understand what cannot be conveyed through instruction alone. An embodied sage of relational restoration, Hedy’s work contributes to the healing of our fractured world, one couple at a time. – Nancy Hyatt, LICSW and Transformational Coach

What Draws People to Essentials?

Encounter-centered Transformation: Essentials is designed for professionals who work directly with couples or with any dyad where people are willing to engage in the work of deep connection.

Essentials is not a general relationship course.

It is an immersive dive and opportunity to sit close to Encounter-centered Transformation and witness how the work unfolds in real time. To observe, revisit moments and details, and notice things you’ve never been quite able to see before.

Whether you are new to EcT or have been practicing it for decades, Essentials gives you access to Hedy’s current thinking and the structure she now uses in guiding. It reflects the ongoing evolution of her work as it has grown and deepened through decades of practice.

Some people will enroll wanting to understand Encounter-centered Transformation more deeply or learn Hedy’s newest thinking about Encounter-centered Transformation and it’s practice.

Others will enroll because they are curious about how Hedy actually guides couples through the work.

Still others will be looking for an opportunity to observe the Couple’s Journey from beginning to end and notice what becomes visible when nothing substantive is edited out.

If you are drawn to witnessing how this work unfolds moment by moment, and curious about what becomes possible when two people learn to create a different quality of connection, Essentials may be a meaningful next step for you.

What If You Could Sit With Hedy?

Think back to the trainings you have invested in over the course of your professional life.

In live settings, you may witness brief demonstrations. Moments that move quickly while you are in the room, and that you only get to see at a distance.

In recorded formats, you may be able to replay moments, but you often only see curated excerpts.

It is incredibly rare to have the opportunity to observe the entire process, moment by moment, from beginning to end, up close and replayable.

Hedy does not open her private work with couples for close observation.

In the rare live trainings she offers, only brief demonstrations may be shown, and they are not designed for the kind of close observation that allows you to linger with the work, revisit a moment, and notice what might otherwise be missed. It’s not that she doesn’t want people to have that level of experience, but that there usually just isn’t time to offer that.

Now imagine sitting in the room while Hedy masterfully guides couples through her life’s work.

You have a front-row-center seat, An impossibly close, front row seat. Nothing is condensed, and nothing important is edited out. You are watching the full unfolding, not just highlights.

And imagine being able to stop her, return to a moment, and watch again when you need to see something more clearly.

Essentials is Hedy’s invitation to experience this level of access to her work.

It allows you not only to witness what happens when couples work with her, but to return to those moments again and again, noticing the nuances of guiding, the unfolding of connection, and the many small moments that shape transformation.

If this is the kind of access and learning experience you have been looking for, we invite you to begin by completing the practitioner questionnaire.

Questions to Consider

Understanding the Work

What is Encounter-centered Transformation®, and who is Hedy Schleifer?
Hedy Schleifer is a Master Relationship Builder with more than four decades of professional experience in guiding couples and teaching relational work worldwide. She holds a BA in Psychology from UCLA and an MA in Clinical and Child Psychology from Tel Aviv University, and her 55-year marriage to her husband, Yumi z”l, served as what she often called their “living relational laboratory.”

Her transformative model, Encounter-centered Transformation® (EcT), is the current iteration of the work, and a culmination of decades of clinical practice, teaching, and interdisciplinary study. Drawing from Martin Buber’s philosophy, Imago Relationship Theory, Appreciative Inquiry, relational neurobiology, and memory reconsolidation, EcT allows for a structured relational process designed to help couples move beyond entrenched patterns and into deep connection and relational maturity.

Encounter-centered Transformation® is the methodology and foundation of the work. The Couple’s Journey is the structured process through which that work is experienced. In its current form, the Couple’s Journey typically unfolds across a series of sessions, during which participants are introduced to EcT and guided into a new way of understanding and engaging in relationship. It is through this process that the principles of EcT become lived, relational experience rather than abstract ideas.

While much of Hedy’s work focuses on its application to couples, at its core, the work is designed for any two people seeking to build a stronger, more meaningful connection. Elements of Encounter-centered Transformation can be applied within therapeutic settings and beyond.

Professionals who work with human relationships of many kinds often find ways to draw on the principles of EcT in their work, regardless of the specific context. We have seen it used by therapists, social workers, coaches, funeral directors, and end-of-life workers, pastoral counselors, and professionals in administrative and operational roles, among others.

Is Encounter-centered Transformation supported by research?
Encounter-centered Transformation has not been subjected to formal clinical trials or certification through a governing research body. The work draws from well-established philosophical and clinical foundations, including Martin Buber’s philosophy, Imago Relationship Theory, Appreciative Inquiry, relational neurobiology, and memory reconsolidation. Across decades and around the world, many professionals, along with the couples they work with, have found its structure and guiding principles to be deeply meaningful and effective in practice.

As with any professional model, thoughtful discernment and responsible integration are essential.

Is Essentials Right for Me?

Is this appropriate if I’m new to EcT?
Yes. Essentials allows you to observe the complete unfolding of the work in real time, making it possible to study EcT from the inside out. While familiarity with relational work is helpful, prior training in EcT is not required. The program invites careful observation and thoughtful integration at all stages of professional development.
Is this appropriate if I trained in EcT years ago?
Yes. Whether you completed a fairly recent training in Encounter-centered Transformation, or you long ago learned an earlier version of the work, such as Encounter-centered Couples Therapy or Encounter-centered Couples Transformation, Essentials is designed for you.

While the current form of EcT is rooted in the same foundational principles, the work has continued to evolve. What you will see in this program reflects Hedy’s current approach, which moves away from a therapeutic model and into a guiding process focused on connection, possibility, and the upward trend. Many professionals who trained in earlier versions of the work have found that Essentials offers a meaningful opportunity to see how the work has developed over time, and to experience it as it is practiced today.

Is Essentials only relevant for professionals who work with romantic couples?
No. While EcT is best known among relationship professionals who work with committed couples, and the video program follows two committed couples through the full arc of the Couple’s Journey, the principles of Encounter-centered Transformation apply to any dyad in which two people are willing to engage in deeper connection.

Many professionals discover ways to apply elements of EcT when working with siblings, business partners, friends, team members, or any two people seeking to strengthen the quality of their relationship.

What can I expect to learn in Encounter-centered Transformation: Essentials?
The purpose of Essentials is simple: for you to watch the work, learn from it, and carry it into the world in whatever ways are meaningful within your own professional context. Through careful study of the complete unfolding of the Couple’s Journey, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Observe the structure and sequencing of the EcT process in real time
  • Recognize the timing and pacing of guiding interventions
  • Study how language and presence create relational safety
  • Identify relational turning points within the guiding process
  • Learn the language of Encounter-centered Transformation and how it functions in practice
  • Understand the distinction between therapy and guiding within the EcT framework, and the role and responsibility of the Guide
  • See how EcT integrates with and complements other relational methodologies
  • Deepen relational intelligence through direct exposure to nuanced guiding

Together, these objectives support a deeper understanding of EcT as a lived, relational process rather than a set of techniques, while deepening your capacity to guide connection with clarity, presence, and relational intelligence.

What can I do with what I learn after completing the video program?
Essentials is designed as a professional study experience rather than a prescriptive training.

As you engage with the material, you may find that it deepens your perception, refines your listening, and expands how you understand relational dynamics. How that translates into your work will depend on your professional context, your experience, and what feels most meaningful to you.

The work can be applied within a therapeutic setting, but it is not limited to one. Professionals who work with human relationships of many kinds often find practical and meaningful ways to integrate elements of what they observe into their work. Some integrate aspects of EcT into work with couples or other dyads. Others find that it shifts how they listen, respond, and guide more broadly.

For many, the impact of this work is not limited to their professional role. It has a way of carrying into their own relationships, deepening how they connect, listen, and engage with others. As with any meaningful professional study, you are entrusted with how the work is thoughtfully integrated into your practice and life.

How the Program Works

Why is Essentials offered in a self-study video format?

Essentials was created to make incredibly close observation of the work possible in a way that would not otherwise be available.

The self-study format allows you to move through the material at your own pace and to return to key moments again and again in order to study the nuances of guiding.

Rather than relying on a single live demonstration that passes in the blink of an eye, this format gives you sustained access to the unfolding of the work, allowing for careful, reflective study over time and in a rhythm that fits your professional life.

Because Essentials is self-study, there are no enrollment windows or start dates. You can begin whenever you’re ready to take the next step in your learning.

How are the modules released?
While this content is infinitely bingeworthy, only the first seven modules are available immediately upon enrollment.

We release the remaining modules after 30 days to support a thoughtful pace and allow for early integration before continuing through the full program. This pacing is intentional, giving the work time to settle rather than be rushed.

Other than streaming the videos, what else is included?
In addition to the video program, you’ll receive downloadable transcripts for every module, the EcT Lexicon defining the core concepts and language of Encounter-centered Transformation, and an overview of The Couple’s Journey.

These resources are yours to download and keep for future reference.

How long do I have access to Essentials?
You will have six months of streaming access to the video program beginning on your date of purchase.

During that time, you may move through the modules at your own pace and revisit key moments as often as you wish.

At the end of your six month access period, your access to Essentials will conclude, but your downloaded resources will remain yours to keep and refer to whenever you like.

Can I download the videos?
No. The video modules are available for streaming during your six-month access period but are not available for download.

Community & Support

Will there be opportunities to interact with Hedy directly during the program?
No. Essentials is a self-paced video program and does not include direct interaction with Hedy.

The intention of the program is careful study of the recorded work, allowing you to observe her and the couples as the work unfolds and integrate what you see within your own professional context.

How can I get my questions about the content answered?
Essentials is designed as a true self-study program. Hedy often describes this as the video version of reading a book. You engage with it, revisit it, and study it closely, taking from it what is meaningful to you and your practice within your own professional context.

For this reason, the program doesn’t include live Q&A or a discussion component. The learning comes through careful observation, reflection, and integration of what you are witnessing.

I have more questions before I dive in. How do I get them answered?
If you have questions about enrollment, access, or program details, you are welcome to contact our team via email. We’re happy to help!

Logistics & Investment

Is Essentials a certification program?
No. Essentials is a professional study program, not a certification or credentialing process.

Its purpose is careful observation of the Encounter-centered Transformation process as it unfolds in real guiding work, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of the method and thoughtfully integrate what they learn within their own professional context.

How does the practitioner questionnaire work?
Enrollment begins with a brief questionnaire where we ask you to confirm that you are planning on using what you learn in a professional context where the material can be meaningfully applied.

It is not an application for approval, but a simple step to ensure that Essentials is being used by professionals.

Submitted questionnaires are reviewed within two business days.

Those who fit the audience for the program will receive a private link to complete enrollment.

Can I earn continuing education (CE) credits for this program?
No. Continuing education credit is not offered for Essentials. This program is designed as a professional study experience rather than a CE-accredited training.
How does the 30-day refund policy work?
Essentials is offered with a 30-day, no-questions-asked refund policy. If Essentials isn’t for you, just let us know via email within 30 days of purchase, and we’ll promptly refund your tuition.
Can I re-enroll in Essentials after my access period ends?
Yes. If you would like to continue your study after your six-month access period ends, or any time in the future, you are welcome to enroll again at the current tuition rate.
Are the couples in the video program real?
Yes. The couples featured in Essentials are real couples who volunteered to participate in the filming of this work.

One couple had previously engaged in couples work, and one had not. We are deeply grateful to them for their willingness to make this level of access possible in service of professional study and the wider understanding of Encounter-centered Transformation.

“Many teach principles; few embody them. Hedy Schleifer does both. To learn EcT from her is the privilege of a lifetime.” — Amy Blake, LCSW
